Bill earned his Ph.D in Laboratory Rock Physics from Purdue University in 1989. After graduating, he worked for Amoco (now part of BP) in Houston doing land AVO, ultimately leading a nine-member technical group in this effort. Upon exiting Amoco in 1997, he joined Brigham Exploration (now part of Statoil) in Austin, Texas, continuing his onshore AVO efforts.

During this time, Bill was heavily involved in the seismic efforts, realizing that the core of the amplitude problems lay in the proper processing of the problematic, low signal-to-noise land data. Bill left Brigham in 2000 to join AXIS geophysical (purchased by Ion Geophysical and merged with GX Technology, later sold to NEOS) as the company's processing manager.

Yearning once again for the days of a smaller company, Bill moved to Echo Geophysical in 2004 as a senior staff geophysicist. Bill started his own company, Eskaton Seismic, in February 2012, to help support a local charitable organization.

Since 2005, he has processed seismic from home just south of Raleigh, North Carolina. Bill married a North Carolina native in 2006, and has 3 wonderful step-children and an adopted daughter.
